Woodcut Books

"Specimens of early wood engraving" by Dodd William (1862).

In the searches I'm doing in archive.org I've found many interesting books on graphics, decoration, ornaments, engraving, etc. I'm creating an annotated bookmark to include in an upcoming post, including a book by Henry Lewis Johnson on cover design published in 1923.

This woodcut is part of the book published in 1862 called "Specimens of early wood engraving" by Dodd William, publisher and author.

The book of xylene specimens is from a collection of an 18th century Newcastle publisher, John White, he is originally from York, son of the publisher of the same name. He arrives in Newcastle in 1708 and begins editing the newspaper called the Courant in 1711, also publishing a great variety of small ones. The specimens, for the most part, will constitute the figures of books published by his father in York.
